The Commonwealth Government has announced that it will invest more than $100 million over the next two years in family relationship services. This translates to funding of about $5 million for organisations in the Canberra area, including the Marymead Child and Family Centre and Relationships Australia.
Seeking advice and support from organisations experienced in resolving relationship difficulties can help you to reach satisfactory outcomes without the need to incur significant legal fees. These organisations provide important support services for couples, such as counselling, skills training and mediation.
We also encourage clients who have separated to take advantage of services such as family and couples' counselling, specialised family violence services, dispute mediation and parenting support. These programs can help to reduce the number of issues in dispute between parties to a divorce or separation and can make the legal process less stressful.
Recent times have seen an increase in the number of people seeking support for relationship difficulties. This can be attributed to greater financial pressures on households, but also an increased willingness on the part of couples to seek independent support in resolving problems before they get out of hand and in reducing tension in cases of separation.
Additional Commonwealth funding should assist family relationship services to become more responsive to the individual needs of families and children.
